Learn how to use a measuring tape dispenser to cut and apply consistent quilt binding strips. This guide covers setup, measuring, and common mistakes.
Quick Answer
Use a self-adhesive measuring tape dispenser to mark and cut uniform binding strips without a ruler or mat. The tape acts as a guide for consistent widths.
Why a Tape Dispenser Helps with Binding
Cutting binding strips can be tedious if you measure each one individually. A self-adhesive measuring tape dispenser lets you apply a temporary guide directly to your fabric or cutting surface, so every strip is the same width without re-measuring.
How to Use a Tape Dispenser for Binding Strips
- Attach the tape to your cutting surface: Pull the self-adhesive tape from the dispenser and press it along the edge of your cutting mat or fabric. Align the 0 mark with the fabric edge. Make sure the tape is straight—use the grid on your mat to check alignment.
- Use the repeat marks as width guides: The 12-inch repeat marks on the tape help you cut strips of consistent length. For binding, cut strips at your desired width (e.g., 2.5 inches) by following the tape markings. Common mistake: cutting through the tape—use a rotary cutter and blade that won't damage the tape surface.
- Peel and reposition as needed: When you finish a section, gently lift the tape and reposition it for the next set of strips. The tape is designed to be repositionable without losing adhesion. If the tape loses stickiness, wipe the surface clean before re-applying.
